The improvements were divided into two phases as described below and shown on the map on the next page.

Phase 1 has been completed and addressed the upstream approximately 2,200 feet of Underwood Creek located between the CPR Bridge (RM 0.81) and Mayfair Road (RM 1.27). This reach was not impacted by the MCG Floodwater Management Facility, because the diversion occurs at its downstream end. The Phase 1 reach had considerable land area available for floodplain improvements. It included a majority of the compensatory wetland (approximately 5.6 acres) and Butler’s garter snake habitat required by the environmental permit conditions associated with the MCG Floodwater Management Project.

Phase 2 is currently under design and is slated to begin construction this fall. It addresses the approximately 4,400 feet of Underwood Creek from the CPR Bridge (RM 0.81) downstream to the confluence with the Menomonee River (RM 0.0). This reach is a much more constrained corridor, with numerous adjacent structures. As a result, the Phase 2 improvements could not be completed until the MCG Facility was online and reducing the flows in this reach. The Phase 2 project will result in the elimination of four drop structures and the development of the remaining approximately 2 acres of compensatory wetland area from the MCG Project.
